The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a vital ligament that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability of the knee joint. However, due to its crucial role, the ACL is also one of the most commonly injured ligaments in the body. ACL injuries can occur due to various reasons, such as sports-related injuries, slips, falls, or accidents. These injuries can range from mild to severe. Their treatment varies depending on the extent and nature of the injury. In this article, we will discuss the five most common ACL injuries and the different treatment options available for each. ACL injuries are common in athletes and active people. Knowing the symptoms, causes, and treatments can help you prevent and manage them.

5 Common ACL Injuries and How They Are Treated

Now, let’s dive into the five most common ACL injuries that people may experience and learn how each one is treated.

1. ACL Sprain

ACL Sprain is an injury to the ACL that causes stretching or partial tearing of the ligament. Here are some causes, symptoms, and treatment options for ACL Sprain:

Causes:

Sudden twisting or pivoting motion of the knee joint

Awkward landing from a jump or fall

Direct blow to the knee

Symptoms:

Pain and tenderness around the knee joint

Swelling and stiffness in the knee

Reduced range of motion

Instability or a feeling of giving way in the knee

Difficulty walking or bearing weight on the affected leg

Treatment options:

Rest and ice: Initially, it is recommended to rest the affected knee and apply ice to reduce pain and swelling.

Compression: Applying a compression bandage or wrap around the knee can help to reduce swelling and provide support to the joint.

Physical therapy: A physical therapist can guide you through exercises that help to strengthen the muscles around the knee joint, improve range of motion, and reduce pain.

Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help to manage pain and reduce inflammation.

Surgery: Surgery may be required if the sprain is severe, causing instability in the knee, or if there is significant damage to the ligament. Surgery involves reconstructing the ligament using a graft from another part of the body or a donor graft.

Note: It’s important to note that the treatment approach for ACL Sprain may vary depending on the severity of the injury, age, and activity level of the patient. Visit the best ACL surgeon in Jaipur for proper advice.

2. ACL Tear

ACL tear refers to a complete or partial tear of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone in the knee joint.

Causes:

Twisting or pivoting of the knee during sports activities such as basketball, soccer, or football

Direct impact or collision on the knee

Landing awkwardly from a jump

Sudden change in direction while running

Aging or degeneration of the ligament

Symptoms:

A “pop” sound or feeling in the knee at the time of injury

Severe pain and swelling in the knee

Instability and giving way of the knee while walking or bearing weight

Limited range of motion in the knee joint

Tenderness or bruising around the knee

Treatment Options:

There are several treatments options for ACL tear. Some of them are:

Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) immediately after the injury to reduce pain and swelling

Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve range of motion

Use of knee brace or crutches to support and stabilize the knee

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain management

Surgery for severe or complete ACL tears, such as ACL reconstruction surgery using a graft to replace the damaged ligament. It is always better to consult the best ligament surgeon in Jaipur for better treatment options.

3. Avulsion Fracture

An avulsion fracture is a type of ACL injury that occurs when a piece of bone attached to the ACL gets pulled away from the main bone due to excessive force or tension.

Causes:

Avulsion fractures are usually caused by sudden movements or forces that put stress on the knee joint, such as landing awkwardly from a jump, sudden changes in direction during sports activities, or a direct blow to the knee.

They are more commonly seen in children and teenagers due to the weaker bones.

Symptoms:

The common symptoms of an avulsion fracture include sudden and severe pain, swelling, tenderness, bruising, and limited range of motion.

It can be difficult to bear weight or move the affected knee without pain.

Treatment options:

Depending on the severity of the fracture, treatment options may include rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to reduce swelling and pain.

Immobilization through braces, crutches or casts may be required to keep the knee stable and allow healing.

Physical therapy may be recommended to help restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion.

In severe cases, surgery may be needed to reattach the bone fragment to the main bone or to reconstruct the ACL if it has been completely torn.

Surgery may also involve the use of screws or wires to hold the bone fragment in place while it heals.

4. ACL Contusion

An ACL contusion is a bruise or injury to the anterior cruciate ligament without a complete tear. It is a common injury in athletes who participate in high-impact sports such as football, basketball, or skiing.

Causes:

An ACL contusion can occur due to a direct blow to the knee, which damages the ligament and surrounding tissues.

It can also happen as a result of sudden twisting or hyperextension of the knee.

Symptoms:

Swelling, tenderness, and stiffness in the knee

Pain during movement or when pressure is applied to the affected area

Reduced range of motion and difficulty bearing weight on the affected leg

Bruising or discoloration around the knee joint

Treatment options:

Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) therapy to reduce pain and swelling

Pain medication or anti-inflammatory drugs to alleviate discomfort and inflammation

Physical therapy exercises to restore flexibility and strength to the knee joint

Wearing a knee brace or using crutches to support the injured knee

Surgery may be needed in severe cases, such as when the ligament is partially torn or when other structures in the knee are affected.

ACL reconstruction surgery is a surgical procedure that aims to rebuild a torn or damaged anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee joint. The procedure involves removing the damaged ACL and replacing it with a graft, typically taken from a tendon in the patient’s own body or from a donor. you can visit best ligament surgeon in Jaipur anytime to get all the help you need.

Causes:

ACL reconstruction surgery is usually recommended when a patient experiences a complete tear or significant damage to their ACL.

This injury often occurs during activities that involve sudden stops, changes in direction, or jumping, such as sports or athletic activities.

ACL injuries may also occur due to a slip or fall, trauma, or accidents.

Symptoms:

Pain and swelling in the knee joint

Limited range of motion in the knee

Difficulty walking or bearing weight on the affected leg

A popping sensation at the time of injury

Instability or feeling of giving way in the knee joint

Treatment options:

Non-surgical treatments such as rest, ice, compression, and physical therapy may be recommended for mild to moderate ACL injuries.

However, in cases where the injury is severe, or the patient is an athlete or someone with an active lifestyle, ACL reconstruction surgery may be necessary.

The surgery involves removing the damaged ACL and replacing it with a graft made from the patient’s tissue or a donor.

Rehabilitation and physical therapy are an essential part of the recovery process and may last up to six months or longer, depending on the extent of the injury and the type of surgery performed.

Knee replacement surgery, or knee arthroplasty, might be the right option to give you relief from pain and mobility problems caused by arthritis or injury. The surgery involves removing the damaged parts of your knee and replacing them with an artificial joint.

Knee replacement surgery has advanced in recent years to allow you to resume an active lifestyle after the operation. While it also helps you avoid further joint problems and complications down the road.

Knee replacement surgery can be performed through several different approaches depending on your personal medical history and preferences, but here is everything you need to know about knee replacement surgery.

What is knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement surgery, also known as total knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged, worn, or diseased knee joint with an artificial one. It is performed when all other treatments, such as medication and physical therapy, have failed to provide adequate relief from pain and disability caused by arthritis or injury.

During the procedure, the damaged joint is removed and replaced with a metal and plastic implant. The procedure usually takes about two hours to complete and requires several days of hospitalization.

The most common reasons for undergoing knee replacement surgery are severe osteoarthritis and post-traumatic arthritis. Other conditions that may require knee replacement include rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, fractures, and ligament tears. In some cases, it may be necessary to perform a partial knee replacement rather than a full one.

Why might you need knee surgery?

Knee replacement surgery may be recommended by best knee replacement doctor in Jaipur if you are experiencing pain and disability due to a joint problem such as arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for needing knee replacement surgery. Other reasons include rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and post-traumatic arthritis.

Arthritis causes damage to the cartilage that lines the joint, and this can lead to pain, stiffness, and difficulty walking or moving your leg. When non-surgical treatments such as medications and lifestyle changes fail to reduce pain and improve your quality of life, knee replacement surgery may be recommended.

The main goals of knee replacement surgery are to reduce pain and improve movement. This surgery replaces damaged parts of the knee with an artificial joint made up of metal and plastic components. This artificial joint functions like a normal knee joint, providing stability and allowing you to move the leg normally again.

The different types of knee replacement surgery

When considering knee replacement surgery, there are a variety of different types of knee replacement surgeries available. Depending on the severity of your condition, you and your doctor will determine which type of surgery is right for you.

1. Total Knee Replacement (TKR): It is the most common type of knee replacement surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon will replace your damaged knee joint with a new artificial one. This procedure is recommended for patients who suffer from severe joint pain, instability, and immobility due to arthritis or injury.

2. Partial Knee Replacement (PKR): It is another type of knee replacement surgery where only a portion of the damaged knee is replaced with an artificial one. This procedure is typically recommended for those with a more localized area of damage in the knee joint.

3. Knee Osteotomy: It is a procedure that can help redistribute weight and pressure away from a damaged knee joint. This procedure involves cutting and reshaping a section of bone in the leg. It is usually reserved for younger patients or those with minor damage to their knee joints.

4. Knee Fusion: It is a more permanent solution that fuses together two or more bones in the knee to create a single solid bone. This procedure is generally recommended for patients who have severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis.

The type of knee replacement surgery you undergo will depend on many factors such as your age, medical history, and the severity of your condition. It’s important to discuss all your options with your doctor before deciding which type of surgery is best for you.

How to prepare for knee surgery?

If you are considering knee replacement surgery, it is important to understand the process and what you need to do to prepare. Knee replacement can be an effective way to reduce pain and improve mobility, but it is essential to understand what is involved before undergoing the procedure.

Before you can have a knee replacement surgery, you will typically need to get a physical exam, X-rays, and other imaging tests done by your doctor. These tests will help your doctor determine if knee replacement surgery is right for you. Depending on the results of these tests, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes such as losing weight or avoiding certain activities that could worsen your condition.

Once it has been determined that a knee replacement is the best option for you, there are still some steps to take to ensure that you are adequately prepared.

Here are some tips for preparing for knee replacement surgery:

1. Make sure you understand all the risks associated with the procedure and ask questions of your doctor if needed.
2. Ask about the type of anesthesia that will be used and make sure that you know the potential side effects of the medication.
3. Get help from family members or friends to make sure you have enough support both before and after your surgery.
4. Talk to your doctor about any medications you are taking and follow their instructions when it comes to taking them before the surgery.
5. Prepare your home for your recovery. Make sure there are no stairs or furniture that could be dangerous for you to navigate. Set up a comfortable space for rest and relaxation.
6. Arrange for transportation to and from your surgery, as well as any post-surgery appointments.
7. Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding diet and exercise prior to surgery.
8. Knee replacement surgery can be an effective way to reduce pain and improve mobility, but it is important to make sure you are adequately prepared beforehand.

By following these tips, you can help ensure a safe and successful outcome from your surgery.

The recovery process following knee replacement surgery

Recovering from knee replacement surgery can take anywhere from four to six months. During this time, you will need to focus on caring for your knee and following your doctor’s instructions. This can include physical therapy, using a brace or splint, resting, and taking medications as prescribed.

The key to successful recovery is patience and careful management of your activity level. It is important to gradually increase your activity level as you feel comfortable and as your doctor advises. This will help you build up strength and flexibility around the replaced knee joint.

You may experience some pain or swelling during the recovery period, but this should improve with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (known as RICE treatment).

Your doctor may also recommend certain exercises that target the muscles around your knee joint. You should strive to do these exercises regularly to strengthen your muscles, build stability, and increase mobility. Your doctor can provide guidance on what activities are appropriate at each stage of the recovery process.

It is important to remember that the recovery process from knee replacement surgery can take several months. The more patient and committed you are to following your doctor’s instructions and adhering to a regular exercise program, the more successful your recovery will be.

Swelling, pain, and stiffness are some signs of common knee ailments. Most of us have probably encountered one or more of these symptoms. The diagnosis of ACL injuries should be left to the experts. Do not attempt to diagnose knee pain on your own if you experience any kind of discomfort; instead, see a doctor.

Why Are ACL Injuries So Common?

Because they are composed of tendons, cartilage, bone, and ligaments, the knees are incredibly intricate and prone to injury. Additionally, they endure a lot of stress from our activities and from our bodies. They might be damaged by falls and bumps since they bear weight.

The Following Is A Summary Of Some Of The Most Typical Knee Injuries Symptoms And Causes:

Symptom: The knee is swollen, uncomfortable to the touch, and unpleasant to move.
Cause: The ligament or cartilage under the knee cap may have softened, or there may be damaged cartilage or ligaments.

Symptom: Sharp discomfort behind the knee that makes stretching your leg painful.
Cause: Potential hamstring tear.

Symptom: The knee is painful all the time, difficult to move, and unstable when weight is placed on it.
Cause: Possible meniscal tear In the knee joint, the meniscus is the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones.

Symptom: A swelling and a dull pain in the knee.
Cause: Possible articular cartilage injury. This can occasionally be brought on by a physical injury or just general wear and tear.

Symptoms: Include knee instability, which may tend to give way when weight is put on it, a “popping” sound when you stand up, swelling of the knee, and soreness when standing that may actually make it difficult for you to do so.
Cause: Potential anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury is the underlying cause. ACL injuries are more frequent. This is the typical dog injury that we frequently hear about out of interest.

Symptom: The knee’s form varies.
Cause: Possible internal knee fracture or damaged ligaments.

All You Need To Know About Knee Replacement Surgery

Symptom: Knee swelling, pain in the knee joint, instability when bearing weight, and decreased mobility.
Cause: Joint hyperextension in the knee. a common injury that occurs when the knee joint is forced to stretch past its normal straightened position in numerous activities that include jumping and pivoting. Heavy physical impact or just a bad landing might cause this.

Symptom: Swelling in the knee’s back.
Cause: Potential Baker’s Cyst

Symptom: You are between the ages of 12 and 18 and have knee discomfort when you touch it as well as swelling and soreness.
Cause: Osgood-Schlatter disease might exist. When they experience growth spurts in their adolescent years, this has an impact on many boys.

Symptom: Acute pain that lasts for some time after engaging in intense activities like jogging or leaping between the shinbone and the kneecap.
Cause: Potential Tendinitis is an injury to the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shinbone that is typically brought on by engaging in too many vigorous activities.

Symptom: When the knee joint is manipulated, there is knee pain and a grinding sensation. Sometimes the knee will lock up.
Potential cause: Torn cartilage.

Although these knee problems are relatively prevalent, that does not imply they should be disregarded. I advise you to see your doctor for knee pain therapy if you have any of these signs or symptoms.

Dr. Rajat Jangir has more than 15 years of experience in the medical field and is among the best orthopedic doctor in Jaipur.

What exactly are ligaments and what do they do?

The knee joint is a fairly complex joint, as was already established. Any joint’s stability depends on a number of variables. The height of the Inter-Condylar Notch of the Tibia, where the Femur articulates in the knee, and the depth of the hollows in the bones at the joint can both help to stabilize the joint. Then there are the muscles and the passive or static stabilizers, which are referred to as ligaments.

Because they are unable to contract like muscles, ligaments are also referred to as passive or static stabilizers. Ligaments attach from bone to bone and act across joints. The four main ligaments of the knee are responsible for stabilizing the joint. the following four ligaments:

Lateral collateral ligament (LCL)

Medial collateral ligament (MCL)

Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL).

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)

There is a significant chance that the knee will be unstable if any of these ligaments are fully torn.

Collagen, a robust protein fiber structure, gives ligaments their great tensile strength. Ligament tears are rated for severity on a scale of 1, 2, and 3, with 3 denoting a rupture that has either completely or nearly completely ruptured. Surprisingly, since the nerve endings are severed rather than injured, complete ruptures frequently cause less pain than partial tears.

You might have been playing a short game of backyard football or enjoying a game of hoops with your pals when you felt a pop in your knee. There was certainly an instant swelling and excruciating pain after that pop. All of those symptoms are typical ones for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) damage.

What is ACL?

An important ligament in your knee joint is the anterior cruciate ligament. You have a posterior cruciate ligament that cooperates with your anterior cruciate ligament to allow you to flex and extend your knee. Your ACL also helps to keep your knee joint stable and reduces your chance to consult knee specialist doctor in Jaipur.

ACL tears cause your knee to lose some of its stability, which is typically fairly obvious.

The following are signs of an ACL tear:

Pain and sensitivity

Swelling

Popping noise or feeling

Make an appointment with one of our surgeons to discuss your injuries if you’re exhibiting any of these signs. The sooner a treatment strategy is developed, the sooner you can resume your regular activities.

How to Prepare For Surgery?

If you have torn ACL injuries and need surgery, you could feel anxious about it, especially if you don’t know what to expect.

5 Preparation Tips for ACL Surgery

Make Inquiries

Half the battle is won by being aware of what to anticipate from surgery. Ask any questions you may have about the operation or your recuperation during your preoperative appointment. Make sure you are aware of both the hazards and the advantages of the operation.

Look After Yourself

The most crucial step for you to remember before your surgery may be this one. Prior to surgery, maintaining the best physical condition possible helps facilitate recovery and lower your chance of complications. Prior to surgery, you can keep healthy by giving up smoking and maintaining a healthy diet.

Make Plans

You won’t be able to bear any weight for a few weeks after surgery. You will find it challenging to carry out daily tasks like cleaning, cooking, and taking care of the yard. You can make some meals in advance, enlist the assistance of friends and relatives to take care of the dog or the yard, and eliminate any obstructions from your home that will make it difficult to walk around.

Practice Using Crutches to Walk

To encourage the healing of the new ACL tissue, you won’t be able to bear weight on your operated leg for a few weeks after the treatment. Crutches can be awkward to use on stairs and in other parts of your home, and they can be challenging to get used to. To make your recuperation more simpler, try to use them as often as possible before your surgery.

Attempt to Unwind

To keep your mind at ease before your treatment, try meditation or other calming activities. Your worry and anxiety before and after the procedure can be reduced if you enter surgery with a calm and peaceful attitude.

Recovery Tips for ACL Injuries After Surgery

You’ll be sent home to relax after spending some time in postoperative care. Your discharge instructions will be reviewed with you by our personnel before you depart. For a speedy recovery, paying attention to these guidelines is essential.

You can use cold and compression for the first week to reduce postoperative swelling. Pillow-raising your leg could also be beneficial. After surgery, you might experience some pain, so make sure to take any medications our doctors provided for you if you require them.

Everyone recovers at a different pace, but after having your ACL injuries repaired, it might take up to nine months to reach full health. You’ll likely combine physical therapy with at-home exercises during this period to help your knee regain strength and mobility.

Schedule a consultation with one of our surgeons or physician assistants right away if you’re prepared to discuss your ACL injuries alternatives. Contact link

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral elbow discomfort or lateral epicondylitis, is a condition that is not always linked to tennis. Tennis players, on the other hand, are more likely to acquire the ailment as a result of repeated muscular activity. As a result, tennis elbow affects half of all tennis players at some point throughout their careers.

Tennis elbow is a kind of tendinitis that produces discomfort in the elbow and arm due to swelling of the tendons. These tendons are tissue bands that connect your lower arm muscles to the bone. Despite its name, tennis elbow may strike somebody who has never been near a tennis court.

Arm muscles are weakened by repetitive arm movements, and the tendons that connect muscle to bone are torn. So when you bend or straighten your arms, grab or lift anything, your tennis elbow might cause discomfort. Tennis elbow is the most prevalent cause of elbow discomfort seen by doctors at physiotherapy sports injury clinics. It may strike anybody at any age, although it’s most frequent around 40.

Causes of Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is a condition that evolves gradually. Repetitive activities, like grasping a racket during a swing, may place undue pressure on the muscles and tendons. In addition, the continual training on the tissue might ultimately produce tiny tears. You require a physiotherapy sports injury consultation if you face discomfort from the tennis elbow.

The force of a racquet swing may rotate through and around the wrist if the technique is incorrect. This might put additional strain on the tendon, causing discomfort and inflammation. In addition, the elongation of the fingers and wrist are linked to the tennis elbow. This kind of motion promotes a person to “snap” or flick their wrist, such as when swinging a racquet. Tennis elbow, despite its name, pertains to any overuse damage to this specific tendon. However, tennis elbow may also be caused by everyday activities.

Treatment of Tennis Elbow

The treatment of tennis elbow (TE), also known as Lateral Epicondyle Tendinopathy, is based on conventional tendinopathy rehabilitation principles. However, rehabilitation should use a multi-modal approach in order to achieve long-term objectives and fulfill individual requirements. One of the best physiotherapy sports injury clinics in Jaipur will be a great option if you are seeking help with your tennis elbow.

The tennis elbow heals typically on its own, which is the good news regarding therapy. All you have to do now is rest your elbow and try to catalyze the healing process as much as possible. Treatments that are beneficial include:

Rest

It’s critical to give your arm a chance to recover. A pause in action enables the tendon attachment tears to heal. In addition, tennis players use cold, anti-inflammatory medicines, soft tissue massages, stretching exercises, and ultrasound treatment to treat more severe injuries.

Injections of steroids

Injectable corticosteroids are a great option if you wish to reduce joint pain and inflammation for a brief duration. However, many doctors will administer these injections with ultrasound guidance since they must be put in a particular region.

The forearm is strapped or taped

Supporting the region might assist in realigning the muscle fibers and relieving pressure. A doctor could advise wearing a splint for two to three weeks to keep the elbow from moving.

Cold Press

Placing ice on the elbow aids in the reduction of pain and edema. Experts suggest doing it every 3 to 4 hours for 2 to 3 days, or until the discomfort is gone.

Physiotherapy for Sports Injury and Tennis Elbow

Physiotherapy for sports injuries aids in the restoration of full physical mobility before the injury level by using mild workouts that stimulate the injured tissues and muscles. Then, with the decrease of discomfort, your physiotherapy sports injury clinic progressively introduces different stretching and strengthening activities.

Racquet sports players should improve their shoulder, upper arm, and abdominal muscles, according to physical therapists. During shoulder and arm motions, this may aid in minimizing wrist extensors. Physical therapy exercises may also help to improve your grip and forearm muscles.

In addition, massage, ultrasound, and other muscle-stimulating treatments may aid in pain relief and function improvement. It’s also good to do range-of-motion exercises to decrease stiffness and promote flexibility. But make sure you do it with the help of an expert. For example, your doctor could advise you to perform them three to five times each day.

Exercises should focus on TE treatment since they are the best management option we have right now. Patient education on their disease, prognosis, treatment choices, and self-management may not be successful in the near term and should not be employed as a stand-alone strategy.

Reduced tendon load is an effective treatment method that must be combined with tissue resilience to allow for progressive advancement to the desired load by training the tendon’s mechanical characteristics.

The specific program for eccentric contraction exercises in tendinopathy rehabilitation is the classic approach. To develop tendon tolerance to loads, workouts must be progressed gradually. The general advice offered in any MSK treatment is to exercise in the pain-free range and avoid activities that worsen the pain.

However, the long-term advantages of activities that adequately strain the tendon and increase tissue tolerance may need some discomfort at first.

If your symptoms don’t improve after six to twelve months of nonsurgical treatments, your doctor may suggest surgery, such as arthroscopic or open tendon debridement or tendon repair. The damaged tendon and muscle are usually removed during surgery. Healthy tendons and muscles from another section of your body are used to replace the injured tissue.

It may take four to six months for you to recover. If you’ve experienced tennis elbow, you may need to wear a brace to protect the symptoms from coming again.

Recovery Tips after ACL Reconstruction Surgery

(Anterior Cruciate Ligament) ACL Reconstruction Surgery is to reinstate the torn ligament that is present in the center of the knee. Any act of twisting or an injury can result in the same. It’s one of the considerably injured ligaments of the knees. This surgery is performed by arthroscopy which is minimally invasive surgery. It’s generally required for people who experience recurrent cycles of knee instability because of anterior cruciate ligament deformity.

The timeline of recovery post-surgery varies from person to person. A person is quite curious to know when he will be able to get back to a normal schedule and can regularly perform his chores. The recovery process takes place in multiple phases and the person with each passing phase tends to feel better.

The initial 2 weeks post-surgery are considered to be very essential as during this time the body is most vulnerable. One may encounter pain, swelling, and the building of excess fluid around the knee joint. So it’s important that the patient understands the recovery tips and follows them for getting a good start. So let’s get a detailed note about the various recovery tips after ACL RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY one should abide by after their anterior cruciate ligament surgery for an affluent and faster recovery.

Recovery Tips after ACL Reconstruction Surgery

1- Follow the Strategies Explained by the Doctor

The ultimate goal of every doctor is the long-term recovery of his patient and for this; he explains the strategies that should be followed. Managing symptoms and regaining pain-free strength and function should be the goal of every patient. The therapist teaches exercises that are helpful in stabilizing knees and strengthening too. And this could help in returning to day-to-day activities soon.

2- Regular Intake of Painkillers in the Initial days

Pain levels are quite high in the beginning or for the few days after surgery and doing exercise is also necessary. Most of the times doctor prescribe medicines that can help in controlling pain, so that patients can focus on physical therapy, which helps in complete rehabilitation.

3- Icing for Reducing Swelling

Swelling is part of the inflammatory response, which stops muscles from working and is quite common after surgery. So its important to reduce swelling by treating with compression, rest, and icing. Doctors recommend three to four 15 minutes sessions of icing in the early stages for desirable results.

4- Crutches or Brace are good options too

In case of any feeling of instability in the knees uses crutches or wear a brace after surgery for a few weeks. Range of motion exercises performed during therapy is all to keep the kneecap mobile. So these options can help in achieving recovery goals.

5- Proper Care of Incision is necessary

After ACL Reconstruction surgery at least 15 days are required for wound healing. But for this all instructions should be followed like dressing at the proper time, keeping the wound area dry and covered, showering, etc. Bathtubs, swimming pools and hot tub activities should be avoided till the doctor doesn’t allow them.

6- In case of Any Unexpected Symptoms Call Doctor

A number of times patient hesitates to call the doctor for small queries and either takes medicine on their own or waits. But in case of any unexpected symptoms like swelling or mild fever, one should consult the doctor.

Hope the above tips will help you in recovering soon!

About the Knee

The knee joint is formed by the lower end of femur, upper end of tibia (leg bone) and patella (knee cap). The ligaments of the knee play a crucial role as they are the most important element in providing stability to the knee.

Ligaments of the Knee

The knee is stabilized by four main ligaments – two ligaments in the center of the joint (cruciate) and two ligaments on either side of the knee (collateral ligaments). The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is in the front of the knee joint and it prevents the tibia from slipping forward. The Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) is at the back of the knee and it prevents the tibia from slipping backwards.

The collateral ligaments prevent abnormal sideward movements of the tibia. The Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) stabilizes the inner side of the knee and the Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) along with a few more ligaments stabilizes the outer aspect of the knee.

How ACL is damaged

Body contact sports, road traffic accidents and awkward fall are common causes of ACL injury.

How do I know

Many people can hear a “CRACK” or “POP” at the time of injury, followed by immediate swelling and pain. Players often have to be carried off the field. Later there will be pain, weakness and a peculiar looseness of knee- giving way- the most disabling problem.

What is the treatment

It depends on your disability and your activities. In brief, if you are engaged in lots of outdoor activities and heavy work and not willing to restrict your activities then you need an operation to make a new ligament. This applies to most young and active people.

What is the operation

Operation is done in general or spinal anesthesia. At first inside of knee is examined by a telescope, which is introduced through small puncture (arthroscopy). Next a new ligament is prepared by taking few fibers from the tendons around knee. Generally the hamstring or patellar tendon is used.

This newly fashioned ligament is then placed inside the knee which grows and matures to take the function of original ligament.

What if I do not get operated

Other then the disabilities like giving way, pain, swelling etc. it is said to be the “Beginning of The End of Knee.” The knee suffers repeated injuries because of its undue laxity and early arthritis sets in.

ACL Surgery Guideline For patients

Preparation before the operation:

1. Arrange for a leave about one month from your work.

2. DO NOT eat or drink anything after Midnight. (NBM)

3. Report to hospital 8 a.m. – Please bring your all X ray and reports with you.

4. The hospital stay is usually 2-3 days – bring your clothes accordingly.

After operation

1. Exercise: Start the static quads exercise the same day. From next day a qualified physiotherapist will take you through a detailed exercise schedule.

2 .Walking: You can stand up next morning and start walking. You will need the help of a stick or a pair of crutches for the first few weeks. However, walk minimally for first two weeks after operation. This reduces pain, swelling and helps healing.

3. ICE: Compress: Put some crushed ice in a plastic bag, cover it with dry towel and place it on the knee for 15-30 minutes. Do it four times daily.

4. Dressing: Will be changed in the hospital the after the operation. No further dressing is usually necessary. Keep it dry until stitches are removed.

5. Stitch removal: Usually done 12-14 day after operation.

6. Shower: Allowed only after 2 weeks, when stitches are removed.

7. Toilet: You should use commode for 2-3 months after operation (If you do not have commode at home arrange for a chair commode)

8. Driving: You can drive a car after two months and a two wheeler after three months, provided you have good power and control of leg.

9. Activities: During first two weeks you should mostly rest in bed with leg elevated on a pillow, and do exercise as advised. Subsequent movements depend on your muscle strength and type of operation.

Generally, after 4 weeks one can join light office duties.

After 8 weeks one can join gym, ride a bicycle or drive a car.

After 4 months light on field activities are allowed.

After 6 to 9 months games can be played provided good muscle power is achieved.
